Some Wins to Celebrate and our Special Thanks to ARK Members

By Jen Hilburn – Riverkeeper

The beginning of 2016 finds brings us several items to celebrate:

1. WoARK jen Lake Sinclairrking with partners and communities throughout the Southeast coast, the Bureau of Ocean Energies Management has excluded Georgia among other SE states from offshore oil exploration in its newly released 5-year plan. While we may fight again in 5 years, we can celebrate for now!

2. Working in a diverse coalition we have been successful in stalling Kinder Morgan’s proposed Palmetto Pipeline. We will continue fighting to stop this unnecessary pipeline endangering our treasured private and public lands and rivers.

3. We have won a variety of local battles like stopping Epic Midstream’s proposed ethanol transfer station in Macon, and we are fighting many others. Working from Atlanta to the Atlantic for clean water, for us and for future generations.

And just how pristine and unique is our fabulous watershed?  Last summer Altamaha Riverkeeper was contacted by Kyunghyang Shinmun (S. Korea, Seoul’sDaily news) via Patagonia. They are doing a series on salt marshes and had many questions regarding the health and protection of Georgia’s salt marshes. We gave them a history of the CMPA & current work with partners to protect our marshes. Last fall Won-Sik Chong, a reporter from Kyunghyang Shinmun was sent to document what is believed to be the most intact and protected coastal marshlands in the world!! It’s an honor to be part of amazing communities who believe in the health and protection of our coastal resources!
