James Holland's complaint letter
Subject: Hollingsworth and Vose Corporation
Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2007 08:27:55 -0400
Good Morning Mr. Bethune,
Attached is some photos of the Hollingsworth and Vose Corporation
effluent
discharge into the Ocmulgee River a couple of miles up river
from
Hawkinsville. Two of these are aerial photos taken by me
on 4-34-07. As a
matter of fact all the attached photos were taken by me. Also
attached is
a photo of Bruce Berryhill (7-28-02) collecting some of the effluent
in a
gallon jug for us to get a closer look at the effluent. Samples
then and
later revealed that this effluent is milky in color and has thousands
of
little pieces of what appears to be paper in it. The area
around the
discharge also has a terrible odor.
The ARK is requesting your assistance in preventing this type
discharge
into the Ocmulgee River. This effluent with its microscopic
and
macroscopic solids can't be helpful to the benthics community and
fish in
the Ocmulgee River. Please look at the photo of the cypress
knee's in
front of the pipe; it was taken 01-01-06 by me also.
I believe a check of your records will reveal that I have filed
numerous
complaints in the past about this awful effluent going into the
Ocmulgee
River.
We would like to thank you in advance for your assistance in this
very
important matter.

ARK has documented and reported problems with this pipe to the EPD
since 2002.
Altamaha Riverkeeper James Holland took these
photos of the Hollingsworth & Vose
discharge pipe in January 2006 and reported it to the Environmental
Protection Division (EPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural
Resources . Later trips to the pipe revealed similar problems
with the discharge and were also reported to EPD. The Macon Telegraph
ran the story below on August 20, 2006.
