Diamond Back Terrapin

Diamond Back Terrapin is our "Animal of the Month"

Facts:

  • Females start depositing their eggs from April through late July on the sandy banks of marshes and estuaries.
  • A single female can lay anywhere from 4 to 12 eggs per clutch.
  • Terrapins love to dine on crabs, snails, shrimp, fish, mussels, clams, and other assorted crustaceans.
  • In the early 1900's diamondbacks were a popular gourmet food. Terrapin soup was served in many of the fine restaurants on the east coast.
  • Diamondback Terrapins are protected under GA las has an "unusual species".
  • They are one of the only animals to live their entire life in the salt marsh and estuaries.
  • Diamondback Terrapins look as though they are always smiling.

Here are some fun facts:

  • Raccoon means Curiosity, Dexterity, Disguise
  • The record life span for a captive raccoon is 21 years
  • Baby raccoons are called kits
  • Raccoons can easily unlock doors
  • The heaviest raccoon recorded was 62 pounds
  • Raccoons have a keen sense of touch
  • There may be as many as 8,000 raccoons living in large cities
  • Raccoons never den more than 1,200 feet from a permanent water source
  • If you give a raccoon a sugar cube, it will first try to clean it (as raccoons clean all their food before eating it). It will wash it and wash it until the sugar cube finally dissolves to nothing.
