See State’s Largest CypressJoin Altamaha Riverkeeper on a Hike to the Largest Cypress Tree on RecordAn exploration to see the old giant tree - 44 feet and 5 inches wide – guided by James Holland former Altamaha Riverkeeper followed by the story of how he discovered it. The trip is not to be missed and space is limited. Join us on a July 23 hike to the ancient Altamaha River swamp, lush with trees estimated to be more than 1,000 year old. The Murf conservation track, where the tree resides, is between McIntosh and Long County. In past hikes to the area we have seen beautiful wading birds, Prothonotary Warblers, and vireos so bring your binoculars. The hike to the prehistoric giant tree swamp is not long distance but wading through water, mud, and vines is necessary. ARK is offering the tour on a first-come first-served basis to the first 15 current ARK members who make a $50 or more per person contribution and a reservation to go on the trip. For non members, the cost is $80 and includes an ARK membership. Suggested Clothing: shoes to wade in water, light
weight loose clothing We will meet you in the Darien Outlet Mall parking lot next to the Ruby Tuesday Restaurant at 8 a.m. Darien Exit 49 off I-95. At that point, we will caravan in the cars for about 20 minutes to the Murf track to begin our adventure. Bring a picnic lunch and a folding chair. After exploring for 2-3 hours or however long you want in the shaded cypress forest there is a gorgeous area shaded by large oaks where we can picnic on the bluff overlooking the swamp.
