Darien, (founded 1736) lies on Georgia's coast at the mouth of the Atlamaha River, an area where shrimp flourish in nutrient-rich marshes and estuaries before migrating to the Atlantic Ocean. During the early 1960s, Darien and McIntosh County had the largest shrimping fleet on the Georgia coast.

Today, the Georgia shrimp industry faces serious hardships. Shrimp prices are down and diesel gasoline, equipment, and other expenses for trawlers are high. Industry problems are compounded as foreign-farmed and antibiotic-treated imported shrimp flood the American market.

According to DNR marine biologist Julie Califf, ten years ago the average number of shrimp trawler licenses sold annually was between four and five hundred but that number is dropping, the number of licenses sold in 2010 was 304.
