Miller Lake, photo by Pete Krull

Miller Lake in the Altamaha River is home to many massive ancient bald cypress trees and large fish. Miller Lake is near the Townsend Wildlife Management Area where James Holland, retired Altamaha Riverkeeper, discovered the largest cypress tree in Georgia and surrounding states at 43 feet and 5 inches in circumference.

In 2010, the state purchased 6,911 acres in Long County, an area approximately 10 miles along the Altamaha River, which is considered to be one of the most valuable ecological corridors in Georgia. The area contains a variety of critical wildlife and the hollow cypresses are home to roosting bats including the vulnerable species, the Rufinesque’s big-eared bat.
