Around the Watershed in 80 Days

Roseate Spoonbill

Gabriel Haman, ARK Board member chooses winner.
L-R David Lewis, Gabriel Haman, Sonja Cox and Constance Riggins

Congratulations Joni House! When notified of winning the Around the Watershed in 97 Days drawing, Joni House said, “I would scream but I’m at work. That’s amazing I’ve never won anything before.”

Joni is the winner of a two night stay at Little St. Simons Island. Thanks to the eco lodge, we were able to offer this chance to win to campaign contributors of $250 or more.

ARK Board member, Gabriel Haman, chose the winner at Sapelo Farms, one of the last remaining farms in Glynn County and a wonderful setting to announce the winner of ARK’s fundraising tour that began on Ground Hogs Day and ended on May 9.

These photographs were taken at Sapelo Farms, owned and operated by Gabriel and her parents, Betty Ann and David Lewis, who maintain their agricultural heritage with great pride. Approximately half of the farms 180 acres is in open pasture and sustainable agriculture while the remainder is maintained in a conservation wildlife habitat of long-leaf pine trees.

As development encroaches from all directions, the farm is an oasis among shopping centers and subdivisions, where Santa Gertrudis cattle, Boer goats, and heritage breed chickens roam the fields and barnyards and beehives thrive among abundant flower gardens.

The farm’s fresh seasonal produce is sold through a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Program to individual customers and several local restaurants. For more information on Sapelo Farm’s local sustainable produce, honey, and beef for sale, go to: http://sapelofarms.com/

Working together to keep our watershed a better place to live. Stay tuned for more beautiful watershed wonders.
