Come Rain, Come Shine
Lots of fish were caught at the first Altamaha Riverkeeper Fishing Rodeo at the
Jaycee Landing in Jesup on the Altamaha River and it was fun for
all, even with the river gauge standing at a challenging eleven
feet. Contestants brought in bass, blue gill, shell cracker, red
breast, and catfish in the June 7th event and the occasional rain
showers did not affect the large number of red breast weighed in.
Music and original oil paintings of the Altamaha River were featured
in an event that gave every one an opportunity to enjoy our beautiful
resource in the river.
The winners of the rodeo were:
- Carey Davis caught the largest bass at 2-1/4 pounds, winning the $200 prize.
- Ed Vann and Hamp Rooker, fishing in the same boat, landed the largest bream at 1 pound, winning the $100 prize. They also took the prize for the heaviest 15 bream per boat weighing in at 9 3/4 pounds winning the prize of $50.
Two largest catfish prizes of $50 each were awarded due to a tie.
- One $50 prizewinner was Carol Bozeman for her one pounder and another $50 prize went to Rick Kent and Brenda Vasquez, who were fishing together, for their one pounder.
The Altamaha Riverkeeper, James Holland says, "For those like myself, who fished but did not win, I wish you better luck the next time and watch out for the ones that got away. We had so much fun we might make it an annual event." The
Altamaha Riverkeeper Organization says thank you to all the fishermen, sponsors,
and board members, who made everyone a winner by being a part of the rodeo.
